"I film my brother swallowing a fish and trying to regurgitate it, as he has seen it on YouTube. He takes my sister's goldfish. He swallows it. The goldfish doesn't come out again." Hannah, Marius and Anna are on stage together to tell Anna's family story. To do this, they resurrect the family’s home, which no longer exists.
Anna's family members say about the play: "This play is self-deception.” "I think it's macabre to imagine our parents dancing with each other on stage once again just because you wish they would." "This play is not about us, it's about you. After this, you're free."

At the same time it is the title of a documentary that precedes the play development of Familienfest oder wie man einen Goldfisch schluckt: In 2018, I ask my parents and siblings to give a tour through the house in which we once lived together as a nuclear family. The house is empty and about to be sold. Three of my four family members join the video-tour-idea. Two of the three family members have their video-tour filmed by their partner.
The film material documents the thresholds from the classic nuclear family to an alternative family system, from generation to generation, from living space to living space, which is
on the threshold as gutted architecture in the memories and future plans of its inhabitants with pasts and possibilities. The documentary shows how different people remember the same time in different ways. The same rooms of a place of residence describe themselves anew in each of the videos.
